Carving and Edible Pumpkins

Carving pumpkins isn't just a random Halloween tradition — it's got roots that go way back to when people believed the world was crawling with spirits on chilly autumn nights.

You see, it all started with the Celts and their festival of Samhain, where they believed the veil between the living and the dead was thin. To keep those mischievous spirits at bay, they'd carve turnips and potatoes into creepy faces, stick a candle inside, and hope that would scare away anything lurking in the dark.

Fast forward a few centuries and Irish immigrants brought this spooky tradition to North America, where they discovered pumpkins—a much bigger, juicier canvas for their carvings. Inspired by the legend of Stingy Jack, a trickster who roamed the Earth with a carved turnip to light his way after outwitting the Devil, the tradition of the jack-o'-lantern was born. These days, we're not so worried about ghostly visitors, but we still carve pumpkins to keep the spirit (pun intended) of Halloween alive.
